ABOUT CUT & CRAFT LEEDS

Taking over the former Jigsaw and Ben Sherman retail units and what once was the former Collinson’s Cafe, where Wallace Hartley had played in the orchestra shortly before boarding the Titanic as Band Master you can expect a luxurious setting that maintains the character and history of the building with a beautiful central dome and a classic circular Cut & Craft central bar.

We’ll bring our famous Flat Iron Steak, classic mains and bespoke hand-crafted cocktails, beers and wines.

23 King Edward Street
The history of this site

In 1906 the site was occupied by Collinson’s, a local family-run business who were famous for its tea blending and coffee roasting. The front part of the store was used for selling confectionary and the rear of the store was home to Collinson’s Café, which gained a reputation for being a great place to meet to enjoy tea, cakes and live music. Music seemed to have played a huge part in its success, with live music nights and a string quartet often playing to accompany guests’ dining.

A member of the regular string quartet that played at the site was a talented musician named Wallace Hartley. Music, it turned out would be his blessing and his curse for it was his musical talent that progressed his offer to work as ‘band master’ on The White Star Line’s luxury shipping Liner, The Titanic.

The tragic events on the night of the 14th April 1912 are legendary and so too was Wallace’s response to the disaster. He gathered all eight musicians on the ship and began to play for passengers as they boarded the lifeboats. In Wallace’s pockets amongst other things recovered from The Titanic, was a silver matchbox engraved ‘From Collinson’s Staff Leeds’. We pay tribute to Wallace’s heroism and honour his time spent playing music for guests in this building.

I decided to treat myself to a good lunch today. The cut and craft is new and a beautiful piece to be. The decorations are absolutely stunning and the staff are amazing, you’ll have someone to take your coat/jacket and you do not have to wait too long to be served. I just walked in, I didn’t have a reservation and I was admitted. The background music was slow and beautiful, it will make you fall in love 😉😁.The food is good, I had some prawn, steak and some street corn mixed with cheese and mushroom 🍄. The cocktails tasted as good as they looked. It’s a bit pricey but I tell you it’s worth it. You pay for the steak sauce separately. Above all it’s a nice place to have a lovely meal for whatever occasion or treat you want to get.The rest room is very clean and nice incase you need to ease yourself.I recommend!!!

Very impressed by the young and efficient staff looking after us at this restaurant. A locally based work colleague recommended this venue as exceptional, so I thought I would check it out. You have to book ahead and provide a card for them to reserve your table at £10 per head. Although I expected this to be charged before arriving, it wasn't. The cocktails were more expensive than I'm used to at £14 each, but at least the quality of ingredients was apparent and couldn't be faulted. I started with a mojito and my partner with a strawberry daiquiri, both tasty and suitably potent! On to the starters. Not impressed by the calamari starters, thin and crumbly batter, not great. Mussels starter was very tasty in a Thai green curry sauce. The mains were presented very well and somewhat redeemed the restaurant for my partner. Up to that point we had been comparing the establishment to The Ivy. Although not as well known and a lesser range of menu overall this was a good choice of restaurant and we enjoyed our meals, farmhouse burger and the excellent vegan based fajitas. Definitely worth a revisit if the opportunity arises and will look out for the brand in other UK cities I visit.Points of note: downstairs and upstairs seating; plush surroundings; champagne bar.

Fantastic experience throughout. This restaurant is not only beautiful and well decorated, it has an exceptional menu. Great choices outside of steak too ( I has the sea bass which was incredible). My partner had steak and he thoroughly enjoyed it.Brilliant place to go for a special occasion or a tasteful lunch.Cocktails were also on top form and we felt the prices reflected the experience.Thank you too all the lovely staff who served us, everyone was friendly and attentive. We didn’t once find ourselves having to chase for anything.
