The History of our Building

Located near Manchester Art Gallery and St Peter’s Square, The Cut & Craft Manchester is set within a magnificent Grade II* listed former banking hall. Originally built in 1862 as the headquarters for the Manchester and Salford Bank, this grand Victorian building later became home to the Royal Bank of Scotland from 2001 to 2020.

Designed by renowned Manchester architect Edward Walters, also known for Manchester’s iconic Free Trade Hall, this masterpiece is the last of its kind in the city, showcasing the grandeur of 19th-century Italian palazzo-style architecture. Constructed from Yorkshire stone with elegant granite accents, the building’s impressive façade is matched only by its breathtaking interior. Towering 27-foot-high ceilings, intricate cornicing, and vast arched windows create an awe-inspiring setting that will soon welcome guests to experience exceptional dining.

Beyond its striking design, the site holds fascinating secrets, including a rumoured underground tunnel once linking its vaults to a sister bank across Mosley Street. While much of this hidden passage has been sealed, the intrigue of its past adds to the building’s rich story.

Today, The Cut & Craft is breathing new life into this landmark. The historic banking hall is being transformed into a stunning dining space, while the former vaults below are reimagined as exclusive private dining areas and a stylish bar. Every detail is designed to honour the building’s heritage while creating an unforgettable dining experience in the heart of Manchester.
